Welcome to Our Congregation!
What to expect when you come to Heavenly Rest
Our doors are open every day of the week, as well as evenings for services and special events and all are welcome here – to worship, to wonder, to serve, and to rest in God’s presence.
Our hope is that you will experience God’s love and grace here in many different ways: through the beauty of our historic building and its sacred spaces, through its liturgy and its music, and especially by the warm welcome of our congregation, whose joy we share as people who know they are loved, cared for and enough.
At Church of the Heavenly Rest, there are no steps to navigate; no pre-assigned pews, no dress code. We even welcome dogs, if they are well-behaved!
Please note that we are an accessible church, with no steps up or down as you enter our space. An elevator in our foyer will take you downstairs to our reception desk, art exhibits and meeting spaces.
When you enter our Sanctuary during the week, someone at our security desk will welcome you. Downstairs in our Undercroft, our Receptionist can direct you to the various areas where programs take place.
On Sunday morning, prior to our 10:30am Eucharist service, ushers outside our Fifth Avenue doors and in the Narthex greet all comers. In addition to answering any questions you may have, they hand out service leaflets along with our weekly newsletter, the Messenger. You will see that the Nave is straight ahead of you; the Chapel, used for our Night Prayer services and other intimate events, is to the right, just beyond our Children’s Pray & Play Space.
We have four services on Sunday morning:
In the Church:
10:30am: festive Rite II Eucharist, with music sung by our choir with organ accompaniment
(June-July) 5pm: jazz vespers, featuring our song leaders and the vespers jazz band
In the Chapel:
8am: spoken Rite I Eucharist, with sermon
9am: half-hour Eucharist, with music and homily
(August-May) 7pm: candlelit night prayer, sung by a choral quartet, with homily
We offer coffee, food and fellowship after each Sunday morning service and “World’s Greatest Coffee Hour” takes place in the Church after the 10:30 am Eucharist through out year, except during the summer when we welcome all just outside our Fifth Avenue doors.
